The Fairleigh/Zerbst/Houts House

1601 Ashland Avenue

This house was designed by architect Walter Boschen and built by Lehr Construction about 1917 for William G. Fairleigh, a real estate developer.  The next owners were the Zerbsts, who manufactured over-the-counter medicines -- including an early version of the cold capsule -- at their factory on Messanie.  It was later the home of attorney Joseph K. Houts Sr and his family.  The grand foyer and formal dining room feature ceilings made by an Italian craftsman, cherry wood paneling and carved pilasters.  Three of the large light fixtures and some sconces are original to the house, and Boschen's drawings for these will be on display.  The roof tiles were handmade in Italy.  For a large house (about 8,000 square feet) it is remarkably comfortable and inviting.
