The Burnside-Sandusky Gothic House
720 S. 10th Street
Known locally as ‘The Gothic House’, this 1869 cottage style dwelling is St. Joseph's only surviving example of the
brick Gothic Revival style of residential architecture. It was built in 1869 by John Burnside, a well-known foundry
owner and 4th Ward councilman. In 1887, Oliver Sandusky, a successful produce wholesaler, purchased the house
and added the two-story rear addition, thereby doubling its size. This house has undergone a complete rehabilitation
by its current owner, Patricia McNaughton, who purchased the home in 2000 from St. Joseph Preservation, Inc.
It is still a ‘work in progress’ with the upstairs finished and the downstairs nearing completion this fall.
